I haven't seen a copy with his hanko stamp in many years and I only have this one copy. He passed away the following year in 2007 at the age of 90, not having the opportunity to sign many of these books. It would have been signed by Abe and Shin in person at the Pearl Harbor USS Arizona visitor's center in 2006, the year the book was first translated to English and coinciding with his visit during the 65th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. This is a first edition book in new, unread condition. It is so rare to find a signed copy of this book and in fact, any WWII Japanese pilot. (Courtesy Zenji Abe) Zenji Abe, one of the pilots who bombed Pearl Harbor, was born in 1916 in a small mountain village in Yamaguchi prefecture on the southern tip of the island of Honshu, the son of a sake brewer. It is also signed by the translator and Abe's daughter, Naomi Shin. Imperial Japanese Navy Lieutenant Zenji Abe poses on the deck of the aircraft carrier Akagi sometime in late 1941 or early 1942. To further the rarity of this signature, Abe has added his personal hanko stamp-a stamp traditionally used in Japanese culture to sign important documents and one that is unique only to him. The signature has been replicated in both English and Japanese-very rare. Flat signed (not inscribed) on front title page by Japanese Pear Harbor pilot Zenji Abe, a Val dive bomber pilot that flew from the Japanese carrier Akagi and directed the second wave of the attack. ![]()
